David Cook / RCA
Fan Appeal: Tweens and Up Genre: Rock The self-titled debut album from American Idol winner, David Cook, comes with obvious high expectations. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised to find it a better-than-average offering with some pretty good musical talent and several good songs. “Declaration” is a very strong melody to begin this album with. It is anthemic and is good enough to make you want to keep on listening to the rest of the CD. When you do, you find that, throughout the album, there are a lot of blaring guitar solos and rough vocals that are reminiscent of bands like the Goo Goo Dolls. The song “Heroes” is another solid tune. It opens with a killer lead guitar line, and then talks about heroes, what else? Even though it has a strong opening, the David Cook album has some disappointing moments. There are a lot of rock anthem type songs, and those are often overdone. One or two of these on a CD can be nice, but when the majority of the songs on this album are of that variety, it just becomes predictable and uncreative. Still, overall, this CD is better than most of the other American Idol offerings. So if you (or your kids) are fans of AI, then you could do worse than David Cook. FAMILYFANS RATING: C+ --TN ### |
