Blake Lewis / 19 Records (Arista)
Fan Appeal: Eleven year old girls Genre: Bubble Gum Pop I hate to say this, but my favorite part of Audio Day Dream is the album artwork. Blake Lewis, who made it to the top two in American Idol with his creativity and willingness to stand apart from the others didn’t follow through when he made this album. Lewis occasionally does his beat boxing, which is enjoyable. The musicianship on this album is also pretty good, and fits together well. The vocals sound strong whether Lewis is singing falsetto, which he often does, or not. The best songs are probably the intro and outro. They have a very cool sound that is almost ethereal. Overall, however, this album was a HUGE disappointment. Lewis seemed original and creative while on American Idol, but in Audio Day Dream, he sounds like a former singer from a boy band that’s just like every other boy band. Nothing stands out. The lyrics were poorly written, and almost every song is a cheesy love song like “Gots to Get Her,” or cheesy breakup song like “Without You.” At times Lewis will end a song with a random beat box session thrown in. These just don’t fit with the song, and don’t work as an intro to the next song either. My main disappointment in this album was the fact that there is so little creativity. Not much interesting happens in any of the songs, and they all sound similar. I would recommend that you skip this album, unless you are an 11-year-old girl or a middle-aged mom who misses the days of the Backstreet Boys, and want a new boy band to listen to.
